Pressure-Induced Phase Transitions of Nonionic Polymer Brushes

چکیده
While the temperature responsive behavior of nonionic polymers has been extensively studied and is nowadays one key mechanisms smart materials, pressure response thin films remains basically unexplored. We investigate conformational transition brushes semidilute solutions induced by hydrostatic variations. Interestingly, pressure–temperature phase diagram for coil-to-globule brushes, probed neutron reflectometry, nearly coincides with that in solutions. also show can be understood predicted simple thermodynamic concepts employed so far denaturation proteins. Fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations provide insight into pressure-responsive behavior. Combining all three approaches allows us to demonstrate pressure-induced hydration at low universal as it dictated water polymer-independent. In contrast, dehydration high strongly polymer-specific. The outcomes apply a wide class aid design coatings desired

Compression-Induced Phase Transitions in Water-Soluble Polymer Brushes: The n-Cluster Model
We describe the compression of a water-soluble polymer brush which undergoes compressioninduced phase transitions. The solution behavior of the polymer comprising the brush is described using the de Gennes “n-cluster” model which predicts a region of coexistence between dense and dilute phases. We show that compression of the brush can induce the formation of a dense coexisting phase or the eli...
متن کاملConformational Transitions of Polymer Brushes for Reversibly Switching Graphene Transistors
We developed a facile, but efficient, approach to graphene field-effect transistors (FET) functionalized with polymer brushes, in which the conductance can be reversibly switched by solvent-induced polymer conformational changes. Our experimental and stimulation results demonstrated that the solvent-induced conformational transition of the polymer brush could affect the carrier concentration by...
متن کاملPressure induced phase transitions in PbTiO(3).
Recent theoretical simulations using density functional theory (DFT) and novel low temperature high energy x-ray diffraction experiments clearly show the existence of a high pressure morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in pure PbTiO(3). The experiments show a richer phase diagram than the simulations, with multiple monoclinic phases (Pm and Cm) in the MPB region. In this paper we examine the MPB ...
متن کاملPressure-induced topological phase transitions in membranes.
Some highly unusual features of a lipid-water liquid crystal are revealed by high pressure x-ray diffraction, light scattering and dilatometric studies of the lamellar (bilayer Lα) to nonlamellar inverse hexagonal (HII) phase transition. (i) The size of the unit cell of the HII phase increases with increasing pressure. (ii) The transition volume, ∆Vbh, decreases and appears to vanish as the pre...
متن کاملConformational Transitions of Spherical Polymer Brushes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Theory
We examine the structure of densely grafted polymer layers grown from the surfaces of spherical nanoparticles over a broad range of graft densities and chain lengths. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments show that the hydrodynamic thickness of the polymer layer, h, scales as h N for short chains and high grafting densities, that is, in the concentrated polymer brush (CPB) regime, whereas ...
